Carey Mulligan shone, but why didn't she wear British at the Baftas?
Hilary Alexander is disappointed that the star of An Education failed to spot the wealth of fashion talent on her own door step.
BY Hilary Alexander |22 February 2010

Carey Mulligan may be the toast of the town after scooping her first Bafta as Best Actress, for 'An Education' at last night's awards. But I'm afraid she failed to get a pass mark in fashion.

What a wonderful opportunity it would have been for Ms Mulligan to wear a dress by a British designer. She could have had her pick of any of the talented and respected names showing at London Fashion Week - coincidentally on right now, just down the road from Covent Garden, at Somerset House.
She could have chosen any one of the red-hot young talents who have drawn American Vogue's editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, and French Vogue's editor-in-chief, Carine Roitfeld, to London Fashion Week this season. Designers such as Christopher Bailey for Burberry Prorsum, discount belstaff boots Etnies Bear- Put the fear in Colbert_802, Christopher Kane ,spyder down jackets,转载:十二属相各自的本命佛, Erdem, Marios Schwab - who has just done his first collection for the legendary American label, Halston - or perhaps acknowledged masters such as John Galliano or Matthew Williamson ; or an avant-garde directionalist like Hussein Chalayan - all would have been more than happy to dress her.
If she was really smart, she could have chosen to wear a dress by Alexander McQueen , and thus honour the memory of the talented maverick who died 10 days ago. This occured to both Sam Taylor-Wood and Jamie Winstone, who both wore McQueen.
But on this most fabulous of British film nights, what did Ms Mulligan chose to wear on the red carpet?
A dress by the recently-revived French label, Vionnet.
Now Vionnet is being lauded in top fashion circles as a supremely chic brand - full marks to Ms Mulligan's stylist for having picked it for the young actress to wear in the past.
But it's not British.
I hear on the grapevine that a representative from the British Fashion Council, which organises London Fashion Week, bust up_8361,and fitch, contacted Ms Mulligan's stylist, to offer any help necessary in finding her the dress of her dreams for the BAFTAs. The offer was turned down.
"She's all sorted," they were told rather abruptly.
What a pity. Ms Mulligan's red carpet wardrobe contains a plethora of international names including Prada, Lanvin, Nina Ricci and even the young Singapore-born,christian audigier clothing, Nepalese designer Prabal Gurung , who just made his debut at New York Fashion Week. It's a shame she cannot show such faith in the fabulous wealth of talent right on her doorstep.
Full marks, meanwhile, to all those who flew the flag including Kate Winslet (wearing Stella McCartney), Vanessa Redgrave and her daughter Joely Richardson (both in Catherine Walker); Uma Thurman, Claire Danes and Saoirse Ronan (who all wore Burberry Prorsum); Kimberley Walsh (Jenny Packham) and the stunning Romola Garai, who wore a vibrant, multicoloured floral silk, strapless dress by Erdem - whose show is one of the highlights of London Fashion Week this afternoon.
