GRAND RAPIDS – Princess Diana's three-month visit to Grand Rapids was worth more than $3.6 million to the local economy.
That's the conclusion of Experience Grand Rapids, based on the nearly 100
plus size prom dresse,000 visitors who visited the Grand Rapids Art Museum to see the exhibition “Diana – A Celebration.”
Visitors making day trips generated more than $3.4 million in spending at downtown Grand Rapids restaurants and businesses, according to Experience Grand Rapids.
Combined with the revenue generated by overnight visitors

Formal dresses, according to Doug Small, president of Experience Grand Rapids, a destination marketing organization.
“We're extremely fortunate to have such an extraordinary selection of cultural offerings to promote,” Small said. “The recent growth of Kent County hotel revenue is a direct result of increased collaboration with hotels and area cultural establishments to promote these world-class exhibits to visitors.”

During its three-month run, from Nov. 9 to Feb. 16, the exhibition of more than 150 items in the life of Princess Diana drew 95,770 visitors.
More than 80,800 came from outside Grand Rapids, more than 55

Grand Rapids Art Museum had the honor of welcoming the 1 millionth visitor worldwide to see the show since it first was created in memory of Princess Diana

The final nine days of the show, even with extended hours, were sold out, as were 12 of the last 13 days it was in Grand Rapids.
Based upon attendance patterns in other U.S. cities, organizers had hoped for 70,000 to 90,000 visitors over its 14-week run stay in West Michigan.
Visitors came from 49 U.S. states and Canada. Some 650 out-of-town visitors booked hotel rooms
grad dresses, and 282 tour groups with nearly 6,000 visitors from across the Midwest.
“This exhibition was great for the museum, but it also had a tremendous positive economic impact on our region,” said Randy Van Antwerp, interim museum director.
During the exhibition's run, Grand Rapids Art Museum employed over 60 full and part-time local employees. Museum memberships increased by 60 percent, and museum store sales increased by 128 percent.
“We were also pleased to see a strong increase in new members and the many new visitors who had the opportunity to explore our institution,” Van Antwerp said.
The special gift shop at the end of the exhibition that featured 27 designer dresses worn by Princess Diana saw sales in excess of $400,000. A portion of those proceeds go to charities supported by the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.
