Happy in the Mall

Youdi was wandering around the I.T. store in Sanlitun Village North. She is a native Beijinger studying jewelry design in Birmingham and – like most of the Stylites popping up on this site lately – came back to the city during the holidays.

Beijinger Kim likes to dress funky for his job at Japanese Brand MerciBeaucoup, but he also told me he wouldn’t mind wearing his stripey outfit outside the store.

 Cat on a Roof
Photos&Text:Suzy
Beijing student Zaylin attended Electric Shadows Film Club’s screening of the American classic Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman last night.  The club had been organizing monthly free classic movie streamings on the Bookworm’s rooftop terrace in Sanlitun throughout the summer and will hopefully find an indoor venue during fall and winter.

 At the Flea Market
Photos:Suzy
Actress, Weibo celebrity and “it” girl Tian Yuan organized a flea market at which vendors sold both used and new clothes, accessories and other knick-knacks.  The sellers and wares seemed similar to what one finds on taobao, but the event was quite special, generating a good deal of enthusiasm for all things vintage.  Profits went to charity.

 Three days in Shanghai
Photos and text:Suzy
Last week, numbing heat and thunderstorms made Shanghai a less likeable place to hunt for streetstyles. I met Shanghai native An, who is a co-founder of China at your Side, in front of the expat’s favourite Citizen Café on Jin Xian Road.

 China Fashion Blogs
As I’ve been in the US for the last few weeks, I haven’t had a chance to photograph on the streets of Beijing or regularly update the blog. To make up for the lack of new content here at Stylites,
shanghai escort, let me introduce some other English-language China fashion blogs.
In addition to the just mentioned Accidental Chinese Hipsters blog, the rather unfortunately named Chinese People have no Style gives a taste for what the “real people” are wearing. All of those who complain that my blog has little relationship to the average folks on the street should check this out.
At Shanghai Style File, Hart, the Life and Style Editor at That’s Shanghai introduces the best shops, designers, and style folks in Paris of the East.
My favorite is Eyestore, Guangzhou’s answer to Stylites. Though the writing is mainly in Chinese, photos are the highlight.

 Almost Accidental
Photo:Will Moyer
Recently everyone has been sending me links to Accidental Chinese Hipsters, a street style blog in a very different spirit from Stylites. This photo from my friend Will Moyer seems to capture that spirit. The question always is whether these people are more stylish than the usual fashionistas and hip kids appearing here.

 Echos of Kunming
Photos and text:Suzy
Li Shumeng whose English name is Echo Lee is a native of Yunnan’s City of Eternal Spring. She studies in Chongqing and came back to town to visit friends and relatives over summer break. Kunming seems to be an ideal city to spent the whole year, as I am gradually growing tired of Beijing’s hot, humid and polluted summers and cold dry winters.  The question is whether locals are feeling the same way.  Are creatives and various sundry cosmopolitan types migrating to locations with a higher quality of life?  What city in China provides that perfect balance of vitality and habitability?

 In Lijiang

In tourist-ridden Lijiang in northern Yunnan province, women of the Naxi minority proudly wear their traditional work clothing.  Their combination attire must be combined carefully to achieve sufficient support during their busy day of coming and going to the .market, household duties and even work on construction sites.
