In 1946, Jim Read purchases excess government surplus food products and puts them into vacant stores, starting Cannery Sales in San Francisco. In 1948, Read and Nate Narin, his associate, become the stores and company name to US Markets. 10 years after, Read sells out interest in US Markets to Narin.
Grocery Outlet acquires the remaining liquidated inventories of webvan [4] and wine.com in 2001, as well as reaching their $500 million sales landmark. In 2002, the corporate name of the company was changed to Grocery Outlet Inc., which is what it remains today.
In 1959, Read acquires amuse in Big Bonus Foods, a 10 cache California Bay Area chain, selling normal and surplus goods, as well for perishables.
