Thumbs up Hurricane Irene prompts colleges to change move-in plans

Updated on Friday to include more schools. If you are scheduled to move into an East Coast college dorm this weekend.. . . well, good luck with that. Hurricane Irene is churning its way up the coast, and although it’s still several hundred miles away, everyone is preparing for a stormy weekend with heavy rain. Not exactly ideal move-in weather. And in anticipation of the storm, a few colleges have already changed plans. The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., has asked students to evacuate. wholesale fashion lv handbags online from china Campus buildings, including residence halls, will close down at noon Friday. Opening convocation will be rescheduled and all campus events have been canceled through Monday. (For updates, visit the university’s Web site.) Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., will close at noon Friday and it’s unclear when it will reopen. Monday classes and events have already been cancelled. (Updates) Norfolk State University has canceled all classes on Friday and Saturday, and is encouraging students living in the residence halls to leave the area. (Updates) Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., has canceled classes through Monday and asked students to leave the residence halls by noon on Friday. (Updates) St. Mary’s College of Maryland wholesale juicy handbags online has moved its first day of classes from Monday to Tuesday so that returning students can delay their move to campus until after the storm passes. Freshmen have already arrived and the university plans to proceed with orientation as planned, although some events may need to be moved inside. (Updates) Towson University is postponing move-in and new student orientation events that were scheduled for this weekend. Move-in for first-year students has been bumped from Saturday to Monday. Returning students who were scheduled to move in on Sunday will now do so on Tuesday. (Updates) A man walks in a seaside park as Hurricane Irene passes to the east of Nassau, on New Providence Island in the Bahamas, on Thursday. (Lynne Sladky - AP) The University of Maryland, George Washington University and Catholic University are all opening their residence halls on Friday instead of Saturday so students wholesale cheap newport cigarettes outlet can get settled before the storm hits. U-Md. officials warned students that they may temporarily suspend check-in activities if the storm gets too dangerous. (U-Md. updates, GWU updates and Catholic updates.) George Mason University is relaxing its strict move-in schedule, encouraging students to arrive whenever they can do so safely. (Updates) Have you heard of other schools changing their move-in plans?
