Corsets have been in fashion since the 16th century when they were worn by both men and women. This highly structured corsets tops, form-fitting support garment has been popularized largely by women and, over the centuries, their styles have undergone huge changes such that what initially started out as an undergarment is now quite commonly worn as outer wear.
Throughout its fashion history, the corset has been through quite a few shape variations. Depending on whether it was to accentuate or play down certain aspects of the human form, corsets have been, at different times, underbust, overbust, waist cinchers, or even tubular in shape. In recent years, since they have come to be worn mostly as tops, various styles of corsets have been created to suit the preferences of wearers. Here are some of the most popular corset designs of the 21st century.
• The ‘Scarlett O'Hara’ corset – Typically Victorian in style, this corset creates the classic hourglass profile. Stretching from the mid-bust to the waist, this corset provides a “shelf” style bust support. According to many fashion designers, the ‘Scarlett O'Hara’ corset style is said to bear clear influences of the Civil War designs. Ideally this corset should be worn with an underblouse waist training corsets, or as innerwear.
• The ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ corset – Inspired by the 18th century corsets worn in the movie, this one has been designed as an off-shoulder corset with flat sides, a traditional back lacing, and a fabric front. It typically ends at or just below the waist and has a scalloped bottom edge. The style creates an artificially elevated bust line, and can look quite dramatic. However, those new to corseting are likely to find this style a little uncomfortable since it creates sufficient pressure on the rib cage. Nonetheless, this beautiful garment can also be worn with shoulder straps and is perfect as outerwear.
• The Edwardian corset – This is reminiscent of the overbust Victorian style corset that has a straight edge finish and drops low over the hip. It gives a gentle front lift which can create quite a striking look. This corset is fairly versatile, and if you so desire, you can get an underbust style with a back bottom edge finish.
• Underbust Post-Victorian corset – This is one of the most comfortable corsets ever designed. It is good for waist reduction, easy to dress and undress, and what’s more, you can even go to sleep in this corset! It usually covers the abdomen and is high on the hip bone, but you can alter it to have a straight line or lowered bottom edge. This underbust corset style is capable of creating a sharper profile waist training corsets, all the while retaining the hourglass look.
• The Ribbon corset – Considered an extremely resourceful and flexible fashion accessory, you can make quite a statement by wearing a ribbon corset as a belt over regular clothing. Since it has smaller vertical measurements (typically a 9 inch front busk), it acts like the waist cincher albeit allowing for more flexibility and free movement.
• The Valentine Overbust Victorian corset – This is one corset that can be worn both as outer wear and as inner wear. You can wear it as a bodice under a formal or bridal gown baby dolls lingerie, or you can sport the bustier look with this corset. The style itself offers marvelous foundation control, and you can also attach straps for additional bust support.
Corsets go a long way in creating a striking silhouette. Given the current range of options, even though they remain the ######iest form of lingerie, you can easily make a fashion statement by wearing a corset to a party.
